Black Friday vs. Thanksgiving: Which Will Win?

Many Retail Giants Moving Black Friday Dates Forward

My wife was telling me last night that Kohl’s Department Stores, Target, Macy’s, Best Buy and possibly a few other retail stores are moving their Black Friday Shopping dates a couple of days ahead of Thanksgiving. I believe that last year retailers such as Toys “R” Us pushed the Black Friday day into Thanksgiving day. So one has to wonder, what will happen with Thanksgiving Day?

I understand that all these major retailers and every retailer out there sees the great potential behind the Black Friday Shopping Events, but moving in to the family time tradition filled Thanksgiving Holiday can not be a positive thing. Yes our economy could use a boost, our under employed citizens could use some extra hours especially during the holiday season, but will they be able to enjoy the holidays if they have to work?

Many Will Now Have To Work Thanksgiving Day

If all these retailers open up their stores before and during Thanksgiving day, a lot of moms and dads will not be able to spend time with their family. As all of you know, Thanksgiving is a day when families come together in order to share with each other. Thousands of Americans travel across the country to be with each other every year during this holiday. So what effect will this have on the family life of many people?

Not only that, Black Friday is a day that was spun off from the Thanksgiving festivities, so if the Thanksgiving holiday is virtually eliminated or replaced by the Black Friday shopping day, will Black Friday survive?

Why Not Keep Black Friday As It Was?

Hopefully retailers will realize that keeping Black Friday on the day after Thanksgiving is as profitable as moving it ahead a few days. I think a lot of people had already developed a tradition of going shopping the day after Thanksgiving, and that if they remove tradition from the equation, they might end up hurting their profits instead of making more money.

There was a trend of big retailers offering their Black Friday Deals Online taking place in the market place. Perhaps retailers should focus their energy on making the online shopping experience a bigger extension of the shopping holidays instead of taking away one of the only holidays in this country that still brings families together to share.

When Did The First Black Friday Happened?

For the last couple of years one of the activities that have become sort of a tradition in my family after Thanksgiving Day is our participation in the Black Friday shopping day. As many of you know, Black Friday marks the beginning of the Christmas shopping season, and it is a great day for one to find great deals. Black Friday is considered to be the busiest shopping day of the entire year, and it is a day that can make or break sale goals for many retailers.

Black Friday Deals You Will Love!

Now, as I was growing up, I remember my mom and dad shopping for Christmas presents for me and my siblings, but I can’t remember ever hearing them talk about Black Friday at all. As a matter of fact, I never really went shopping on Black Friday until about two or three years ago, which makes me wonder, how long ago did the first Black Friday officially took place?

According to reports, it is believed that Black Friday as we know it today, was first officially measured or observed as the busiest shopping day of the years back in 2005. It is believed that the name given to this record and pace setting shopping day originated in Philadelphia. Due to the large number of buyers coming out to take advantage of the great deals being offered by retailers, the streets and sidewalks of Philadelphia were inundated the day after Thanksgiving. Hence the term black Friday was used in order to describe the phenomenon.

Later, the term began to be used more widely in order parts of the country, and as it became the norm, it became associated with the profitability of retailers, or with the time when retailers got out of the red and into the black.
